Kanta is the home of the massive Gurkish Empire, the largest and most populous nation in the Circle of the World. The southern continent, Kanta, is a vast land of deserts and arid plains with civilisation clustered around the great rivers. This continent is the location of the Far Country, where rumours of riches and gold have drawn settlers, and the Old Empire, a formerly great nation that has collapsed into civil war.
The western continent is land of prairies and plains, reminiscent of the American West. The Northmen are hardy warriors, living in a land of war, raiding and a rough kind of honour. The North is a land of frozen rivers, towering mountains and ferocious creatures called Shanka. Joe Abercrombie’s First Law world is divided into three continents and numerous large islands. I have no idea what his role is going to be in this series, but I hope this is where we see him get fucked over like he deserves to be. With him back to being empowered by magic, and leading the way in industrialization, Bayaz is arguably the only character that consistently wins in the books involving him, despite (or rather because of) how much of a unfiltered bastard he is. We've seen him in the standalone novels taking place between this trilogy and the last. The world has industrialized and inventions from the printing press to cannons are changing ways of life.Īnd due to the time skip, several of the characters we are following are kids of our old Point of view characters. It's set 30-odd years after the end of the first trilogy and the world has changed.
